The white-faced heron is a slender, elegant bird and the most common heron in New Zealand. Recognisable by its grey-blue plumage and distinctive white face, it is a patient hunter — standing motionless in shallow water before striking at fish, frogs, and invertebrates with lightning speed. It is commonly seen in the Pāuanui estuary and along the beachfront.

Did you know?

White-faced herons only colonised New Zealand from Australia in the 1940s — making them one of the more recent additions to our native bird list. They have since spread across the entire country.

Threats

Nest predation by rats and stoats affects breeding success. Habitat degradation of estuaries and wetlands reduces feeding opportunities.
