The sacred kingfisher is a common but stunning sight around Pāuanui — perching on power lines, fence posts, and branches near water before diving to catch fish, lizards, insects, and crabs. Its vivid turquoise and orange plumage is unmistakable. The kōtare nests by excavating burrows into earth banks or soft wood.
Did you know?
Kingfishers beat their prey against a branch to stun it before swallowing it whole. They are also capable of hovering briefly above water before diving — rare for a bird without specialised hovering anatomy.
Threats
Cats are the main predator threat for kingfishers. Window and vehicle collisions also account for significant losses, as birds often hunt from low perches near roads and buildings.
