The Australasian gannet is a magnificent seabird and a spectacular sight off Pāuanui Beach — plunging from heights of up to 30 metres into the ocean to catch fish at high speed. With its white plumage, golden-yellow head, and long pointed wings, it is one of New Zealand's most impressive birds. Gannets nest in dense colonies on headlands and offshore islands.

Did you know?

Gannets dive into the water at speeds of up to 100 km/h. Air sacs under the skin of their face and chest act as a built-in airbag, absorbing the impact of hitting the water.

Threats

Introduced predators at nesting colonies are a major threat. Climate change affecting fish availability is an emerging concern. Longline fishing also results in incidental bycatch.
